Fishbone Stitch embroidery

How to do a fishbone stitch embroidery in few simple steps

Hi !! In this blog I am going to tell you regarding fishbone stitch embroidery. To give a better clarity regarding the embroidery, I have added number of working images and finally a video for you.

The fishbone stitch is mostly used to do leaves or flower petals. Its called fishbone because of the ‘spine’ in the middle. The smooth look of the stitch and for the spine it looks very elegant.

So, In this write up I shall show you the step by step  method to make a fishbone stitch embroidery on a fabric. The steps involved to create a fish bone stitch embroidery is easy and simple to do.

Now let me give you a brief description about the materials used in this type of embroidery.

Materials required to carry out the embroidery

  • Threads.
  • Needle.
  • Fabric.
  • Embroidery Hoop.
  • Apart from the above, some other materials which I have used are scissors, tracing design, yellow carbon paper and pencil.

I have given details of each of the above materials, their types in my blog https://craftwithjayasri.com/how-to-do-a-stem-stitch-embroidery-in-few-simple-steps/ you can check out the same before proceeding further.

So, once you have collected all the materials required for the embroidery as described above, you can follow the simple steps I have mentioned below for creating the embroidery design.

Steps involved to make a fishbone stitch embroidery

1. Design tracing

  • To start the embroidery, first of all trace the design on the fabric by yellow carbon paper and start the embroidery.

2. Start the embroidery

  • Bring your needle up to the fabric through the point-1, i.e. the tip of the leaf.
  • Now insert it point-2.
  • Bring it up again through point-3 which is very close to right side of point-1.
  • Now make a diagonal stitch to point-4 which is close to left side of point-2.
  • Repeat this process on the other side also. That is bring the needle up through point-5 which is very close to left side of point-1.
  • Again pull the needle down to point-6 diagonally from point-5. Point-6 is close to right side of point-2.
  • Again bring the needle up through point-7 which is very close to right side of point-3. Now like the above steps repeat these process alternatively on the both sides of leaf. This way the “spine” of the fish bone is made.
  • For you ease you can make two lines on the both side of center line like I have made.
  • Following the above steps I have made these leaves and here is the complete look.

  • For this stitch I have taken three strands of floss to give it a smooth look. For fuller look you can also use all the six strands of the floss.

3. Open fishbone stitch embroidery

You can also create open fishbone stitch by keeping a minor distance between the stitches i.e. between point- 1 & 3 and point-1 & 5 and so on. Below is an image of open fishbone embroidery stitch.
